What is oud, and where does it come from?

Oud is agarwood: resinous heartwood that forms inside Aquilaria trees after infection. The tree floods the wounded wood with resin to defend itself, and that defensive resin is the perfume material. Healthy Aquilaria wood is pale and nearly scentless. Only the infected part is worth distilling.

That one fact explains most of what follows. Nobody plants oud the way lavender is planted. The material depends on a tree being wounded, on infection taking hold, and on years passing while resin builds inside the trunk. Supply is uneven by nature, not by design.

The word travels. Oud is the Arabic term, agarwood the English one, gaharu the Malay one, and all three name one resinous wood. Aquilaria is a Southeast Asian genus, so the tree is not far away from here. What is scarce is the infected heartwood, which not every tree carries.

What does an oud scent perfume actually smell like?

An oud scent perfume usually opens sharper than people expect. The standard descriptors are resinous, smoky, leathery and animalic, nearer to warm leather and woodsmoke than to a cedar plank. Some ouds turn sweet as they settle. Some read sour or barnyard-like for a few minutes before the resin takes over.

'Woody' is the word most product pages reach for, and it undersells the material. Cedar and sandalwood are dry and even. Oud is wet, dense and slightly fermented. It carries the quality of something that has been sitting, closer to a hide or a resin than to timber.

That opening is why many people decide they dislike oud after one spray. The first two minutes are the loudest and least representative part of the wear. Resins need skin warmth and time. Judge an oud at the third hour, on your own arm, not on a paper strip.

Why does oud smell so different from one bottle to another?

Four things move an oud: the region the wood came from, the age of the tree, whether the bottle holds distilled oud oil or an oud-style synthetic blend, and how the perfumer uses it. Oud as the whole subject smells nothing like oud sitting under rose as a base.

Here is the sentence most oud pages leave out. Distilled oud oil is one of the most expensive raw materials in perfumery, so the majority of oud fragrances, at every price, are built on oud-style synthetics and blends rather than distilled oil. That is how the category works.

A price tag therefore tells you very little about how much agarwood is in a bottle. What it does tell you is size, brand position and distribution. Buy on how the fragrance behaves on your own skin across a full day, and read every note claim as description.

A name is not a note list. Surrati Malaysia's 2026 price list records no notes for these rows, so what follows is only what the naming tells you: which material the house chose to set beside oud on the label. Honey. Amber. A city. Or nothing at all.

In perfumery generally, honey pushes a resinous accord sweeter and rounder and softens its animalic edge. Amber brings warmth rather than sweetness, and since amber is itself resinous, amber and oud stack resin on resin. A city in the name signals the Gulf reading: oud dense and central.

Why is oud priced the way it is?

Oud is expensive because the material is a wound response, not a crop. A tree must be infected, resin must build over years, and only the darkened heartwood is worth distilling. Finished perfumes then spread across a wide price range, because size, format and blend set most of that price.

On Surrati Malaysia's list the oud rows run from RM 175 to RM 389, and most of that gap is bottle size. Gray Oud is 150 ml at RM 389. Honey Oud is 140 ml at RM 199. Luxury Oud and Amber Oud De Dubai are 100 ml at RM 175 each.

How should a first-time buyer start with oud in Malaysia?

Start small, wear it on skin, and give it a full day. Malaysia is hot and humid year-round, which generally makes fragrance project more and fade faster, so an oud that reads heavy in a cool room can read correct here, and one spray goes further than three.

In practice the 100 ml rows are the sensible entry. Luxury Oud and Amber Oud De Dubai are RM 175 for 100 ml; Oud Dubai is RM 249 for 100 ml. A 150 ml bottle at RM 389 is a commitment to a material you have not yet decided about.

Apply one spray to a wrist in the morning and leave it alone. Do not rub. Check it at hour one, hour three and hour six. Air conditioning and outdoor humidity each change what you smell, which is the test you want, because you will wear this in both.
